For another, what we have here are Lightnin's very first recordings, from the years to , the period when he was at the absolute peak of his powers. There is some overlap with a previous Zircon Bleu release, but whereas that was devoted entirely to Lightnin's Aladdin recordings, the present set also covers the best of his Gold Star output.5/5(2).

Coincidentally -- considering his stage name -- Slim's sound falls somewhere between the rough and tumble blues of Lightnin' Hopkins and the slightly smoother, more broad-based sound of sometime labelmate Slim Harpo. Slim benefited greatly from the blues revival of the '60s, playing concerts and festivals at home and in Europe until his death.

Sam Hopkins, 15 March , Centreville, Texas, USA, d. 30 January , Houston, Texas, USA. One of the last great country blues singers, Hopkins’ lengthy career began in the Texas bars and juke joints of the 20s.

Lightnin' Hopkins had a kit bag of slow blues riffs, a talent for improvising up-to-the-minute lyrics to go with them, and a general distrust of the recording industry that kept him bouncing from label to label for one-off albums in which he always made sure he got his money upfront before he played a note. His recorded legacy is remarkably consistent for all of this label-hopping, .

This release is the first time that all tracks from the original recording session have been issued together.
